Ear Care 101: Keeping Your Earrings Clean and Your Piercings Healthy

Beautiful earrings deserve a healthy home. A little routine care keeps your jewellery sparkling and your piercings comfortable, so you can wear your favourite pieces every day without worry.

Cleaning your earrings depends on the metal. Solid gold and sterling silver can be gently wiped with a soft, lint-free cloth after each wear to remove oils and residue. For a deeper clean, soak them briefly in warm water with a drop of mild, fragrance-free soap, then pat dry. Avoid harsh chemicals, especially on plated pieces, which can strip the finish.

Gemstones and pearls need extra gentleness. Never soak pearl earrings — wipe them with a damp cloth and let them air dry away from direct sunlight. Store pearls separately so softer gems do not get scratched by harder stones.

For fresh piercings, follow your piercer's aftercare instructions carefully. Clean the area twice daily with sterile saline solution, avoid rotating the jewellery, and resist the temptation to change earrings until the piercing is fully healed — which can take several weeks for lobes and months for cartilage.

Even healed piercings appreciate attention. Remove earrings at night to let your ears breathe, and never sleep in heavy, dangling pieces that can tug at the hole. If you notice redness, swelling or discomfort, switch to lightweight hypoallergenic studs and give your ears a break.

Store your earrings in a lined jewellery box or individual pouches to prevent tangling and tarnish. A little care goes a long way — clean pieces, healthy piercings, and jewellery that looks as good as the day you bought it.
